SITUATION QUESTION:

With all you have on your plate with work, family, social invitations, holiday fun, do you run out of energy at times? What do you do to renew your energy?

SOLUTIONS:

My husband and I have a number of different groups we socialize with and we even planned our October Maui vacation around a Barn Dance and an annual Halloween party we didn’t want to miss. Even then, we missed two other events we would like to have attended.

On returning from our two weeks in Maui, we discovered we had three other Halloween party invitations waiting for us. Of course we wanted to go, but we were feeling low energy from our travels and there was so much catch up to do too.

The situation reminded me of something I learned in a Kaiser Pain Management program I attended some years ago. It was, Plan, Prioritize and Pace (three P’s). So that’s what we did.

We looked at the time frame involved and planned what was doable. Then we prioritized work and home priorities with more flexibility on the social events. We recognized immediately that pacing was critical to help us restore our energy. That meant not trying to do more than three things in one day, doing high-energy activities followed with low-energy ones for rest, and watching how we felt to stop for breaks. And most important was getting extra sleep so our bodies could go through the nightly healing process and recharge.

This process has helped us meet our obligations and enjoy the season without becoming overwhelmed.

It’s Halloween this week….. followed by the holidays, so remember to….Plan, Prioritize and Pace yourself so you can enjoy every minute!

Boo!

Happy Halloween!

"Formulate and stamp indelibly on your mind a mental picture of yourself as succeeding. Hold this picture tenaciously. Never permit it to fade. Your mind will seek to develop the picture…Do not build up obstacles in your imagination."
