SITUATION QUESTION:
-------------------------------------

Do you decide you are going to make significant changes in your work so you get promoted, get a better job, lose weight, stop smoking, etc. but never quite make those goals a reality? You may be asking, “What is holding me back? Why am I resisting the change that is necessary to reach those goals?”

---------------------
SOLUTIONS
---------------------

You are holding yourself back. When you look back at the goals that you have not accomplished, you are looking at your own immunity to change. Immunity means resistance. It is a good thing when it applies to illnesses, but a bad thing when it applies to goals and the change that is necessary to make them your new way of life.

Everyone is resistant to change. We’re creatures of habit. During times of transition to the new way we have disaster fantasies because it upsets our sense of security. These thoughts hold us back and stop us in our tracks. We become immune (resistant) to the change we desire.

Psychologist tell us that 97% of all human beings resist change, even when they think or know the change will be positive for them. The number one skill to have in business is the skill to change quickly.

Overcoming resistance to change starts off with “one big thing” according to authors Robert Kegan and Lisa Laskow Lahey. They wrote “Immunity to Change,” (Harvard Business Press) to help you reach your potential.

They zero in on the REASON behind the change. It ultimately dictates the long-term success of the action. The authors call this reason the “adaptive challenge.” When challenge and action sync, results are maintained. When they don’t sync, that’s’ when you get the yo-yo effect of some short-term results and then backsliding.

A lot of people struggle with trying to lose weight. They know what their ideal, healthy weight should be, but they seem to be immune to reaching their weight goal. Most dieters fail and actually pack on the weight loss plus a few pounds. Why is this? Eating healthy and working out at the gym didn’t overcome the “immunity,” the real reason they are overweight and out of shape. They could be eating to overcome stress or victim feelings. They are trapping themselves in their food-oriented comfort zone and not reaching their weight potential.

Don’t stay stuck in the present, create new possibilities. You become what you think you are, not what you could be. The “self authoring” mind creates a “self-fulfilling prophecy” as learning reaches an impasse.

In your work area, pick “one big thing (OBT)” that would help you work smarter. Step back and look for your immunity challenge. What has kept you from working smarter before now? Share with your co-workers and they can assist and inspire you to reach your goal. Perhaps you will inspire them to set a similar goal.

The “Immunity to Change” shares real-people stories on overcoming resistance to change. It can lead you to figure out the true reasons behind your behavior, and how to overcome them. Then you will be more adaptable to reach your potential with a creative self-authoring mind.

Don’t wait for drama and trauma to come into your life before you make the changes you know you need to make to reach more of your potential.

Finding the REASON you overeat is also covered extensively in “Women, Food and God,” written by Ganeen Roth. The book is not on religion and the word God is used to mean your personal spirituality. Many women are finally realizing their weight potential through this book. Meeting personal goals encourages you to meet work goals too.
